Eschatology in the Bible
Eschatology is the branch of biblical theology that studies the "last things": the return of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, and the new heaven and new earth. Though Christians differ over the details and timing of end-times events, Scripture speaks clearly and confidently about the core hope: Jesus will return personally and visibly, the dead will be raised, the world will be judged, and God will dwell forever with His redeemed people. The centerpiece of biblical eschatology is the return of Christ. Jesus foretold, "Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man... they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30). Paul describes this glorious event: "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first" (1 Thessalonians 4:16), after which the living "will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air" (1 Thessalonians 4:17). At that coming, the dead will be raised imperishable. Paul declares the great mystery: "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet... the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:52). The present world order will not endure forever; Peter warns that "the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar" (2 Peter 3:10), summoning believers to holy and watchful living. Eschatology also includes the final judgment and the eternal state. John saw "a great white throne and him who was seated on it" before whom heaven and earth fled away (Revelation 20:11). Yet the story does not end in judgment but in glory: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth" (Revelation 21:1), where "God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore" (Revelation 21:4). Biblical eschatology is therefore a message of sober warning and radiant hope, calling believers to readiness, perseverance, and longing for the day when Christ makes all things new.
