Married Love According to the Bible

Scripture honors the love between husband and wife as a gift of God, celebrated with rare beauty in the Song of Songs. Far from blushing at marital affection and intimacy, the Bible presents them as a blessing to be enjoyed within the covenant of marriage. "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" (Song of Songs 6:3): this refrain expresses the mutual, exclusive, and joyful belonging of two people united before God. This love is neither shameful nor merely carnal; it is the expression of a union God himself instituted. From the beginning it is written, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). Attachment, desire, and shared delight are part of the Creator's good design when they are lived within faithfulness and mutual self-giving. Biblical wisdom invites a husband to rejoice in the wife of his youth: "Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth" (Proverbs 5:18). The letter to the Hebrews 13:4 confirms this dignity: "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled." Married love is therefore not a compromise with the flesh but a path of holiness, where tenderness, faithfulness, and mutual respect reflect something of the love of God. These verses encourage spouses to cherish their union, to guard it from unfaithfulness, and to see it as a gift received from the hand of the Lord.
