The End of Life in the Bible
In the face of the end of life, Scripture offers a hope that surpasses death itself. For the one who is in Christ, to die is not a loss but a gain: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). Death is not annihilation, but the passage into the presence of the Lord, where tears will be wiped away and eternal life begins. This perspective radically transforms the way the believer approaches his own end or that of a loved one. Jesus declares in John 11:25, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." This promise anchors the heart in the certainty of the resurrection, which does not erase the pain of grief but takes away its despair. Revelation 21:4 announces the glorious end of all things: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain." These verses console the one who faces his own departure or accompanies a loved one toward the end. They do not deny the reality of suffering nor the gravity of death, but they set the end of life in the light of the finished work of Christ. For the believer, the last earthly breath is not a wall, but a door opened onto eternal communion with God. The hope of the resurrection changes fear into trust and sorrow into peace.
