Emotional Abuse in the Bible
Emotional abuse is the repeated use of words and behavior to belittle, control, manipulate, or wound another person's heart and mind. While the Bible does not use the modern clinical term, Scripture speaks directly to the power of words and the dignity of every human being, and it consistently condemns the cruelty that crushes the spirit. Solomon warns that "there is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts" (Proverbs 12:18), capturing how cutting speech can pierce as deeply as a physical wound. The tongue, he adds, holds the power of "death and life" (Proverbs 18:21), so that habitual contempt and demeaning words do real and lasting harm. God's heart is tender toward those who suffer such wounds. The psalmist declares that "the LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18), and that He "heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). Far from being indifferent, God draws especially close to the abused and the despairing, offering comfort, validation, and the promise of healing to those whose hearts have been beaten down by mistreatment. Scripture also calls God's people to a radically different pattern of speech and relationship. Paul commands, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, that it may give grace to those who hear" (Ephesians 4:29). Husbands in particular are told, "love your wives, and do not be harsh with them" (Colossians 3:19), forbidding domineering or contemptuous treatment within marriage. Believers are not to repay cruelty in kind but to "bless, for to this you were called" (1 Peter 3:9). The biblical witness affirms that emotional abuse is sin, that its victims are seen and loved by God, and that no one is required to accept ongoing degradation as God's will. Seeking safety, wise counsel, and protective help is consistent with honoring the God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
