Elohim in the Bible
Elohim is one of the most frequent Hebrew names for God in the Old Testament, appearing in the very first verse of Scripture: "In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Though the word is grammatically plural in form, it is consistently joined to singular verbs when it refers to the true God, expressing the fullness of His majesty, power, and divine nature. From the opening line of the Bible, Elohim is revealed as the sovereign Creator who calls all things into being by His word. The name Elohim emphasizes God's transcendent greatness and creative might. The psalmist proclaims that "the heavens declare the glory of God (Elohim); and the firmament shows his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1), so that creation itself testifies to its Maker. In the account of humanity's creation, Elohim says, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness" (Genesis 1:26), a verse that hints at the rich inner life of the one God and forms part of the biblical foundation for the doctrine of the Trinity. Elohim is also the God who is supreme over every other power. Moses confesses that "the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God" (Deuteronomy 10:17), setting Him infinitely above all idols and false deities. Jeremiah likewise contrasts Him with lifeless idols, declaring that "the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King" (Jeremiah 10:10). Yet this mighty Creator is not distant. The same Elohim is "our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1), and Isaiah reminds the weary that "the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary" (Isaiah 40:28), but gives power to the faint. To know God as Elohim is to trust the all-powerful Maker who is also our near and faithful refuge.
