Election in the Bible
Election is the biblical teaching that God, according to His own purpose and grace, chooses people for salvation and for His service. The apostle Paul declares that God "chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him" (Ephesians 1:4), grounding election not in human merit but in God's sovereign love. This choosing flows out of His eternal counsel, for those whom He foreknew He also "predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son" (Romans 8:29), so that the ultimate goal of election is Christlikeness and the glory of God. Throughout Scripture election is consistently described as God's gracious initiative. Paul reminds the Thessalonians that "God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth" (2 Thessalonians 2:13), uniting God's choice with the Spirit's work and the believer's faith. Jesus told His disciples plainly, "You did not choose me, but I chose you" (John 15:16), so that they would go and bear lasting fruit. Far from breeding pride, election humbles the believer and magnifies grace. Election also carries a corporate and missional dimension. Peter applies Old Testament language to the church, calling believers "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation" set apart to "proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9). Paul further insists that God's purpose of election stands apart from works, as seen when God's choice of Jacob over Esau was made "before they were born and had done nothing either good or bad" (Romans 9:11). The proper response to this doctrine is worship, assurance, and holy living, clothing ourselves "as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, with compassionate hearts" (Colossians 3:12). Rightly understood, election is a doctrine of comfort: salvation rests securely in the unchanging will of a faithful God rather than in our own fragile resolve.
