The Elder in the Bible
An elder, in the New Testament, is a spiritually mature man called to shepherd, oversee, and lead the local church. The role carries great weight and honor: "The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching" (1 Timothy 5:17). Far from being a mere administrative office, eldership is a sacred trust to care for God's people with diligence and love. Elders are appointed in every congregation as a matter of biblical order. Paul instructed Titus, "The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you" (Titus 1:5). Aspiring to this work is commendable: "Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task" (1 Timothy 3:1). Yet the office is bound to high character. An elder "must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe," and "since an overseer manages God's household, he must be blameless" (Titus 1:6-7). Godliness, not talent or ambition, qualifies a man for this calling. The heart of eldership is shepherding. Paul charged the Ephesian elders, "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood" (Acts 20:28). Peter, calling himself "a fellow elder" (1 Peter 5:1), echoes the same pastoral charge. Elders feed, guard, and guide the flock entrusted to them. Elders also exercise a ministry of prayer and care for the suffering: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14). In sum, the biblical elder is a humble, qualified, prayerful shepherd who labors in the word, oversees the church, and answers to the Chief Shepherd for the souls in his care.
