What the Bible Says About Egalitarianism

Egalitarianism, within Christian theology, is the conviction that men and women share equal value, dignity, and standing before God, and that gifts and callings in the church and home are not restricted by gender alone. It is built on the foundational truth of creation: "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). Both men and women bear God's image equally and were together given dominion and blessing. This shared image is the bedrock of human equality. The clearest text often cited is Paul's declaration of unity in Christ: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). Paul makes a similar point in Colossians 3:11, where in the new humanity "Christ is all, and is in all." In the gospel, distinctions that once divided people no longer determine one's worth or access to God's grace; all who believe are equally heirs of salvation. Egalitarians also point to the Spirit's outpouring at Pentecost, which fulfilled Joel's prophecy: "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy" (Acts 2:17; cf. Joel 2:28). The Spirit gifts and empowers both daughters and sons for ministry. The New Testament records women serving prominently, such as Phoebe, commended as "a deacon of the church in Cenchreae" (Romans 16:1). Paul also affirms mutual interdependence: "In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman" (1 Corinthians 11:11). Christians differ on how these principles work out in church office and the home, and faithful believers hold complementarian convictions as well. Yet egalitarianism seeks to honor the full dignity of women and men, celebrate the Spirit's gifts wherever they are given, and reflect the unity Christ purchased for his diverse people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Christian egalitarianism?
Christian egalitarianism is the view that men and women share equal value and standing before God and that ministry gifts are not limited by gender alone. It rests on creation, where God made humanity "male and female" in his image (Genesis 1:27), and on unity in Christ, where "there is no male and female" in standing before God (Galatians 3:28).
Which Bible verses support egalitarianism?
Key texts include Genesis 1:27 (both sexes bear God's image), Galatians 3:28 and Colossians 3:11 (unity in Christ), and Acts 2:17 with Joel 2:28 (the Spirit poured out on "sons and daughters"). Romans 16:1 commends Phoebe as a servant of the church, and 1 Corinthians 11:11 affirms mutual interdependence.
Do all Christians agree on egalitarianism?
No. Faithful believers also hold complementarian views, understanding Scripture to assign distinct roles in church and home. Both sides affirm the equal dignity of men and women taught in Genesis 1:27 and Galatians 3:28, but they differ on how that equality applies to church office and family leadership.
