What the Bible Says About Eating Disorders

Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating involve deep struggles with food, body image, control, and self-worth. While Scripture does not use modern clinical terms, it speaks tenderly and powerfully to the wounds beneath these struggles and offers hope, dignity, and healing in Christ. The Bible begins by affirming the inestimable value of the body: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). The body is not the enemy to be punished but a gift to be stewarded, because the believer belongs to the Lord. Much of the pain in disordered eating flows from a distorted sense of identity and worth. Against the lie that one is never thin enough, beautiful enough, or good enough, the psalmist declares, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14). Each person is a deliberate, treasured work of God, not a project to be perfected by self-control or self-harm. Scripture also addresses the anxiety and obsessive worry that often fuel these disorders. Jesus says, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear" (Matthew 6:25). Paul echoes this: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6), and Peter invites us to cast "all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). For those crushed by shame, the gospel speaks comfort: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). Healing often involves prayerful trust, the support of God's people, and the wise help of doctors and counselors. The believer's ultimate aim is freedom and worship: "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). Food can again become a good gift received with gratitude rather than a source of fear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about eating disorders?
Scripture does not name modern disorders, but it speaks to their roots. It calls the body a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19) and declares each person "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14). It answers the anxiety driving disordered eating with God's invitation to bring every worry to him (Philippians 4:6).
How can faith help someone struggling with food and body image?
Faith reframes worth and worry. Instead of finding value in appearance, the believer rests in being God's treasured creation (Psalm 139:14) and casts "all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Psalm 34:18 promises that "the Lord is close to the brokenhearted," offering comfort to those weighed down by shame.
Does the Bible say we should not worry about food?
Yes. Jesus teaches, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink" (Matthew 6:25), inviting trust in the Father's care. Paul adds that we should "not be anxious about anything" but pray with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6). Freed from fear, food becomes a gift received "for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).
