Doubt in the Bible

Doubt is not the opposite of faith, but often the place where faith is tested and matures. The Bible welcomes honest questions rather than condemning them. Thomas doubted the resurrection, yet it was in meeting the risen Christ that he could confess, "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28). A tormented father cried out before Jesus a prayer at once sincere and fragile: "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief" (Mark 9:24). Scripture invites us to bring our doubts to God rather than to flee far from Him. The Word of God also recognizes the dangers of a doubt that closes in upon itself. James exhorts us to ask "in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed" (James 1:6). Doubt is not a sin in itself, but the instability that refuses to trust God can wear out the soul. Faith grows when it anchors itself in the faithfulness of God rather than in the firmness of our own certainties. Scripture finally shows the way through doubt: to bring our questions to God in prayer, to strengthen our faith by His Word β€” "so then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17) β€” and to remember His past faithfulness. The epistle of Jude even calls for compassion: "And of some have compassion, making a difference" (Jude 22). Doubt treated in the presence of God can lead to a deeper, better-rooted, and more assured faith. These verses encourage us to hold firm amid our questions, trusting in the faithfulness of God.
