Christ the Door of the Sheep
In John 10:9 Jesus declares, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." This image of the door of the sheep evokes the fold where the shepherd guards his flock through the night. In the biblical world, the door was the only legitimate access to the sheepfold; whoever entered another way was a thief. Christ presents Himself in this way as the one true access to the Father and the only door of salvation. Jesus reveals Himself not only as the door but also as the Good Shepherd: "The good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep" (John 10:11). The perfect shepherd knows His sheep, leads them to safe pastures, and protects them from danger to the point of laying down His own life. To enter by Him is not merely to cross a threshold, but to find salvation, freedom, and abundant life: "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). The sheep of Christ are recognized by their response to His voice: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). The believer discerns the voice of his Shepherd in Scripture, in prayer, and in the leading of the Holy Spirit, and responds by obedience. Revelation 3:20 shows Christ still knocking at the door of the heart: "If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him." These verses teach that Jesus is both the door and the Shepherd, the one way to God and the faithful guardian of those who are His own.
