Do Unto Others in the Bible
The Golden Rule, spoken by Jesus, sums up the law and the prophets in a single sentence: "All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets" (Matthew 7:12). This principle puts love into action. Instead of demanding what others owe us, it invites us to offer first what we ourselves would wish to receive. It transforms ethics into active empathy directed toward the good of our neighbor. Luke records the same word in a closely related form: "And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise" (Luke 6:31). Jesus places it within a broader teaching on loving enemies and giving freely. The Golden Rule is therefore not a calculation of self-interest, but the expression of a transformed heart that loves as God loves, without expecting anything in return. Living out the Golden Rule means imagining concretely how we long to be treated, with respect, patience, forgiveness, and generosity, and then acting that way toward everyone. It translates the great commandment into daily gestures: "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matthew 22:39). These verses call the believer to recognize in every person a dignity deserving the same kindness he desires for himself. In this way, the love of God, received by grace, overflows into concrete actions that reflect His heart toward the world.
