Divine Justice in the Bible
God is just and governs the world with righteousness, defending the oppressed and judging according to truth. "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne" (Psalm 89:14). Justice is not an external quality that God adopts at times; it is the very foundation of his reign. Everything he does flows from his holiness and faithfulness, so that his judgments are always upright and pure. Scripture assures us that no evil goes unanswered and that God's justice is perfect, even if his timing is not ours. Before Sodom, Abraham proclaims this confidence: "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" (Genesis 18:25). The believer who sees injustice triumph for a time can rest on this certainty: the Judge of all the earth sees everything and will do what is right. God's patience is not indifference, but sovereignty. Because justice belongs to God, the believer is called to renounce personal vengeance: "Never avenge yourselves... for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord'" (Romans 12:19). Placing justice in God's hands frees the heart from bitterness and turns it toward the good. These verses comfort the one who longs for justice, reminding us that God's justice may seem to delay in our eyes, but that it is certain, perfect, and accomplished in his time.
