Self-Control in the Bible

Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit and a mark of spiritual maturity: the capacity to govern one's impulses instead of being governed by them. The apostle Paul places it at the heart of the character God shapes: "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace... self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). It is therefore not first an isolated human effort, but the work of God in the believer, making him capable of discernment and restraint. Scripture often compares the Christian life to that of the athlete. "Every athlete exercises self-control in all things... I discipline my body and keep it under control" (1 Corinthians 9:25, 27). Self-control is not sterile repression nor contempt for the body, but a freedom: the freedom to live according to God rather than be a slave to one's desires. The athlete disciplines himself for a crown; the believer disciplines himself for a life conformed to the will of God. This virtue is cultivated day after day, decision after decision, in dependence on the Spirit. "God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7). Self-control is not a prison, but an open door to true liberty: that of a heart freed from the tyranny of the passions. These verses encourage the believer to cultivate, with God's help, the discipline and self-control that the Spirit produces in him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about self-control?
Galatians 5:22-23 includes "self-control" among the fruit of the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 9:25 says that "every athlete exercises self-control in all things." Self-control is a fruit of God's work and a sign of maturity.
How can I develop self-control according to the Bible?
By depending on the Spirit, who produces this fruit (Galatians 5:22-23), and by training one's character like an athlete (1 Corinthians 9:27). Self-control is cultivated with God's help, decision after decision, in order to live according to his will.
Is self-control a purely human effort?
No. It is above all a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), and therefore the work of God in us. The believer's effort does not create the virtue, but cooperates with the Spirit who produces it, as the athlete disciplines his body toward a goal (1 Corinthians 9:25-27).
