Discipleship Training in the Bible

Discipleship training is the intentional process by which followers of Jesus are formed, taught, and equipped to obey Christ and to reproduce that obedience in others. It is rooted in the Great Commission, where the risen Jesus commands, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19). The goal is not merely converts but obedient, maturing learners who themselves go and teach. Jesus modeled training by calling ordinary people and walking alongside them. "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19), He said to Peter and Andrew, and again, "Come after Me, and I will make you become fishers of men" (Mark 1:17). Discipleship was not a classroom alone but a shared life. Jesus set the pattern of humble service and then told His followers, "I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you" (John 13:15). The disciple is shaped to resemble the teacher, for "a disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher" (Luke 6:40). The early church carried this forward through deliberate multiplication. Paul charged Timothy, "the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also" (2 Timothy 2:2), describing four generations of training in a single verse. After preaching in Derbe and Lystra, Paul and Barnabas "made many disciples" and strengthened them in the faith (Acts 14:21), showing that evangelism and grounding go together. For the church today, discipleship training means more than programs; it is relational, Scripture-saturated, Spirit-empowered formation aimed at obedience and reproduction. Every believer is both a learner and a potential trainer of others. As we teach people to observe all that Christ commanded, the church grows not only in numbers but in Christlikeness, fulfilling the mission Jesus entrusted to His followers.

By calling them into a shared life. "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17). He taught by example, saying in John 13:15, "I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done."
