Spiritual Dryness and Perseverance

There are seasons when the soul feels arid, distant from God, stripped of the joy it once knew. Scripture does not condemn such times; rather, it invites us to persevere in seeking God, trusting that his presence remains even when it can no longer be felt. "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him" (Psalm 42:5). Spiritual dryness is real, but it does not mean that God has withdrawn. Psalm 42 gives voice to this thirst: "As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God" (Psalm 42:1). This longing, even when painful, is itself a sign of spiritual life: the soul that thirsts for God is not a soul abandoned. Faith, then, consists of continuing to seek the One we no longer feel. God promises that his grace is sufficient in weakness. To Paul, weighed down, the Lord answers, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Strength comes not from our emotions, but from God himself. Persevering in prayer and the Word, even without taste or feeling, recalling the promises, leaning on the community of believers: these are the paths along which joy often returns. These verses accompany the believer in dryness, encouraging him to hope in God until joy returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about spiritual dryness?
Psalm 42 expresses the thirsty soul that pants for God and yet exhorts itself: "Hope in God, for I shall again praise him." Spiritual dryness is real, but it does not mean that God has gone.
How can I overcome spiritual dryness?
By persevering in prayer and the Word even without feeling anything, recalling God's promises, and leaning on the community of faith. Strength comes from God: "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Joy often returns as we keep seeking him.
Is thirsting for God in dryness a good sign?
Yes. Psalm 42:1 compares the soul to a deer panting for water. This longing, even when painful, shows that faith is alive: a soul that thirsts for God is not abandoned, but called to seek him again by faith.
