Denying Self in the Bible
Jesus taught that following him requires denying oneself, that is, placing his will above our own. This self-denial is not self-contempt nor hatred of one's own person; it is the surrender of the government of our life into the hands of God. "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). The verb "deny" describes a real detachment from self-centeredness, so that Christ becomes the center of our existence. This path is not a loss but a paradoxical gain. Jesus continues: "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it" (Luke 9:24). In letting go of control, the believer discovers a fuller life, anchored not in his own desires but in the will of the Father. The apostle Paul expresses this same reality: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). The Bible also shows the concrete content of this self-denial. The grace of God "teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age" (Titus 2:12). To deny oneself is therefore, day after day, to say no to selfishness and yes to love, obedience, and service. These verses describe the path of self-denial that, far from diminishing the person, leads them to the true life found in Christ.
