Deliverance by God in the Bible
Deliverance is the work by which God frees his people from danger, oppression, sin, and death. The whole of biblical history testifies to a saving God who intervenes on behalf of his own. The deliverance of Israel out of Egypt remains the founding model: "The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still" (Exodus 14:14). Before the sea and Pharaoh's army, the people experience that salvation comes from God alone. The Psalms continually celebrate this deliverance. "I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears" (Psalm 34:4). The believer calls upon God in distress and finds in him a faithful deliverer: "Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me" (Psalm 50:15). God is "our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). The greatest deliverance, however, is spiritual. In Jesus Christ, God "has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves" (Colossians 1:13). Christ frees us from the slavery of sin and death. The Lord's Prayer teaches us to ask: "Deliver us from the evil one" (Matthew 6:13). In this way, these verses reveal a God mighty to save, attentive to the cry of those who trust in him. Deliverance is not always immediate or as we imagine it, but it is certain for the one who places his hope in the Lord, the great Deliverer of his people.
