Death in the Bible
Death is one of Scripture's most sobering subjects, yet for the believer it is transformed by the hope of resurrection. The Bible is honest about death's universality and its root: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). Death entered the world through sin, and "people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). Scripture neither trivializes death nor surrenders to despair before it; instead, it sets death against the backdrop of God's redeeming work in Jesus Christ. The Gospel's answer to death is the risen Christ. Standing before Lazarus's tomb, Jesus declared, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die" (John 11:25). His own resurrection broke death's power, prompting Paul's triumphant cry: "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" (1 Corinthians 15:55). Because of the cross and empty tomb, death is no longer a final defeat but a defeated enemy. For the Christian, death is reframed as gain and as falling asleep in Jesus. Paul could write, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21), and he comforted grieving believers: "We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him" (1 Thessalonians 4:14). The shadow of death holds no terror for those who walk with the Good Shepherd: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me" (Psalm 23:4). The Bible's final word on death is its abolition. In the new creation, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain" (Revelation 21:4). Until that day, believers face death soberly but without fear, anchored in the promise that the One who conquered the grave will raise them to everlasting life.
