The Day of Atonement in the Bible

The Day of Atonement, known in Hebrew as Yom Kippur, was the holiest day in Israel's calendar, a solemn occasion of national cleansing from sin. The LORD established it through Moses in Leviticus, commanding, "On the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement... you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD" (LEV.23.27). It was a day of humble repentance, fasting, and sacred assembly, set apart so that the people might be made clean before their holy God. At the center of the day stood the high priest's unique ministry in the Most Holy Place. God warned Aaron that he could not enter the inner sanctuary behind the veil at any time he chose, lest he die, for the LORD would appear in the cloud over the mercy seat (LEV.16.2). Only on this day, and only with sacrificial blood, could the high priest approach. The ritual included two goats: one was sacrificed, while over the other Aaron laid both hands and confessed "all the iniquities of the people of Israel," transferring their guilt to the animal (LEV.16.21). This scapegoat was then sent away into the wilderness, bearing their sins far from the camp (LEV.16.10). The promise attached to the day was sweeping: "For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the LORD from all your sins" (LEV.16.30). It was to be a perpetual statute, observed once a year (LEV.16.34). The book of Hebrews reveals the deeper meaning of this ancient ceremony. The writer notes that only the high priest entered the inner room, and "but once a year, and not without taking blood" (HEB.9.7), underscoring how limited and repetitive the old covenant access was. All of it pointed forward to Jesus Christ, the perfect High Priest, who entered the heavenly sanctuary once for all by His own blood. The Day of Atonement thus stands as a profound shadow of the cross, where sin is both judged and carried away forever.
