David in the Bible
David is one of the towering figures of the Bible, the shepherd boy who became Israel's greatest king and the ancestor of the Messiah. Though the youngest and least likely of Jesse's sons, he was chosen by God when the prophet Samuel "took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward" (1SA.16.13). His selection revealed a defining biblical truth, for "the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart" (1SA.16.7). David's heart, not his stature, made him fit to lead. David's courageous faith is most famously displayed in his battle with the giant Goliath, whom he confronted unarmored, declaring, "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts" (1SA.17.45). His trust in God carried him from the battlefield to the throne, where "they anointed David king over Israel" (2SA.5.3). As both warrior and worshiper, David penned many of the Psalms, including the beloved declaration, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want" (PSA.23.1), giving the people of God enduring language for prayer and praise. Yet David's greatness lay not in perfection but in repentance and wholehearted devotion. God testified, "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will" (ACT.13.22), and the prophet Samuel had earlier described him as "a man after his own heart" (1SA.13.14). To David, God made an everlasting covenant: "Thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever" (2SA.7.16), a promise ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David. David's life models faith, courage, heartfelt worship, and the grace of a God who restores the repentant.
