Darkness in the Bible

Darkness holds an important place in biblical symbolism. It represents the absence of God, the reign of sin and death, but also the trials and the gloom the believer sometimes passes through. From creation, God separates light from darkness: "God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness" (Genesis 1:4). Light belongs to God, while darkness evokes what stands against him. Scripture presents God as the one who rules over darkness and brings his light into it. "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light" (Isaiah 9:2). In Jesus Christ, this light appears fully: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5). Jesus declares: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness" (John 8:12). Darkness also describes the domain of evil from which the believer is delivered. God "has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves" (Colossians 1:13). The apostle John reminds us that "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). Finally, even in the gloom of suffering, God remains present: "If I say, 'Surely the darkness will hide me'... even the darkness will not be dark to you" (Psalm 139:11-12). In this way, these verses assure us that no darkness can separate the believer from the light of God, for the Lord dispels all gloom.
