Damascus in the Bible
Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the Bible mentions it from the days of the patriarchs to the dawn of the Christian mission. Its first appearance places it on the map of Abraham's world: when Lot was taken captive, Abram pursued the raiding kings "as far as Hobah, north of Damascus," and rescued his nephew (GEN.14.15). From that early note, Damascus remains a strategic Aramean city throughout the Old Testament, frequently bordering and contending with Israel. Yet Damascus is most famous in Scripture as the place of the apostle Paul's dramatic conversion. Saul of Tarsus was traveling there, armed with letters to arrest followers of Jesus, when "suddenly a light from heaven shone around him" and the risen Christ confronted him (ACT.9.3). Paul himself later recounts that it was "about noon" when this great light blazed about him on the road (ACT.22.6). Blinded, he had to be led by the hand into the city (ACT.9.8). After his sight was restored and he was baptized, Paul did not delay: "immediately he proclaimed Jesus in the synagogues, saying, 'He is the Son of God'" (ACT.9.20). Damascus thus became the very first place where the church's fiercest persecutor preached the gospel. Damascus also marks the beginning of Paul's distinctive calling. He testifies that after his encounter he did not consult flesh and blood but went away, later returning to Damascus, underscoring that his gospel came by revelation, not human instruction (GAL.1.17). The city was likewise the scene of real danger: Paul recalls that the governor under King Aretas guarded Damascus to seize him, so that he had to escape over the wall in a basket (2CO.11.32). For believers, Damascus stands as an enduring symbol of God's power to arrest, transform, and commission even the most hardened opponent of the faith.
