Crying Out to God in Distress

Crying out to God is the expression of a faith that, in the depths of distress, turns to the Lord as its only refuge. The Bible overflows with these heartfelt appeals in which believers pour out their anguish before God, certain that he hears and answers. The psalmist declares: "In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help" (Psalm 18:6). Crying out to God is not a sign of weakness but an act of trust that acknowledges his sovereignty and his goodness. Scripture shows that God pays attention to the cry of the oppressed and the afflicted. When Israel groaned under slavery in Egypt, "their cry for help... went up to God... and God remembered his covenant" (Exodus 2:23-24). The Lord is not indifferent to the suffering of his own: "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted... The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them" (Psalm 34:18, 34:17). Crying out to God engages the whole person: the voice, the heart, the tears. "Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD; Lord, hear my voice" (Psalm 130:1-2). Jesus himself, in Gethsemane and on the cross, offered up "prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears" (Hebrews 5:7), thus sanctifying the cry of the believer. In this way, these verses encourage us never to suffer in silence far from God. When pain goes beyond words, the cry becomes prayer, and the one who cries out to the Lord will not be despised, for he is "a refuge in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9).
