The Crucifixion in the Bible
In the New Testament the crucifixion is far more than a method of Roman execution; it is the doorway to salvation and the supreme demonstration of God's redeeming love. The Gospels record the event itself: Luke 23:33 and John 19:18 describe Jesus crucified at the place called The Skull between two others, and John 19:30 preserves his final cry, "It is finished," announcing that the work of redemption was complete. But the apostles spend even more energy explaining what the cross accomplished. Paul insists that the cross is the very heart of the gospel. In 1 Corinthians 1:18 he writes, "For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." He resolved "to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2), refusing to preach a message stripped of its scandal. Colossians 2:14 explains the legal achievement of Calvary: God canceled "the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands... nailing it to the cross." The certificate of our guilt was fastened to the wood and put to death with Christ. The cross also reshapes the believer's identity. In Galatians 2:20 Paul declares, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." And in Galatians 6:14 he boasts in nothing "except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." To embrace the crucifixion is therefore both to receive forgiveness and to die to the old self, taking up a new life shaped by the love that bought us. The cross is at once history, doctrine, and daily discipleship.
