The Cross of Jesus Christ

The cross stands at the very heart of the Christian faith, the place where the love of God and his justice meet. On the wood of Calvary, Jesus Christ bore the sin of the world and accomplished the reconciliation between God and humanity. The apostle Paul sums up the entire gospel in these words: "I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2). The cross is not a defeat but the triumph of redeeming love. Scripture shows that Christ offered himself willingly. "He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him" (Isaiah 53:5). On the cross, Jesus took the place of the guilty, bearing the condemnation we deserved. In this way God "demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). The cross is also the power and wisdom of God. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). Through his death, Christ triumphed over the powers of darkness and canceled the record of debt that stood against us (Colossians 2:14-15). Finally, the cross becomes a call to follow Christ: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me" (Matthew 16:24). These verses invite the believer to contemplate the sacrifice of the Savior and to respond with faith, gratitude, and self-surrender.
