Creation vs. Evolution in the Bible

The question of creation versus evolution asks how the universe and life came to exist, and what role, if any, God played. The Bible's answer begins with a confident affirmation: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Scripture consistently presents the cosmos not as the result of blind chance but as the purposeful work of an intelligent, personal Creator. Genesis describes God creating the great sea creatures and every living thing "according to their kinds" (Genesis 1:21) and forming humanity uniquely in His own image: "So God created mankind in his own image" (Genesis 1:27). This image-bearing dignity is a central reason many Christians distinguish the biblical account from a purely materialistic, undirected evolutionary story, since Scripture grounds human worth in being made by and like God. The Bible also appeals to the witness of creation itself. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1), and Paul writes that God's "eternal power and divine nature" are "clearly seen" in what He has made, leaving people "without excuse" (Romans 1:20). The New Testament identifies Christ as the agent of creation: "in him all things were created" (Colossians 1:16), and "through him all things were made" (John 1:3). Hebrews 11:3 adds that "by faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command." Sincere Christians differ on the age of the earth and how to read the days of Genesis, and many engage thoughtfully with scientific evidence. Yet across these views, the Bible's core conviction stands firm: the world is not an accident. It exists because God spoke, He sustains it, and He made human beings in His image for relationship with Himself.
