Courage in the Bible: Strength and Trust in God
Biblical courage is not the absence of fear, but resolute trust in God in spite of fear. When Joshua stands at the threshold of the promised land, the Lord repeats this decisive command: "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest" (Joshua 1:9). The foundation of courage is therefore not human strength, but the faithful presence of God who accompanies His people. Scripture shows that courage is born of faith. David faces Goliath not because he feels powerful, but because he knows that "the battle is the Lord's" (1 Samuel 17:47). Likewise, the psalmist declares, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1). Where God reigns, fear loses its grip on the heart of the believer. The New Testament continues this call. Jesus tells His disciples, "Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). Paul, too, exhorts the Church: "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong" (1 Corinthians 16:13). Christian courage consists of persevering in obedience, proclaiming the gospel, and enduring trial without denying the Lord. Thus these verses invite the believer to draw boldness not from himself, but from the One who never abandons him. Courage then becomes an act of daily trust, a refusal to yield to fear, because God goes before and behind His own.
