Conversion in the Bible

Conversion in the Bible is the decisive turning of a person from sin to God, in which the Holy Spirit makes a sinner spiritually alive and creates a wholly new life. It is both God's work and the human response of repentance and faith. Peter calls for it plainly in Acts 3:19: 'Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.' Conversion is not mere reform but a radical reorientation of the heart toward God. Scripture describes conversion as a new birth and a new creation. In John 3:3 Jesus tells Nicodemus, 'Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,' and 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, 'if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.' First Peter 1:23 says believers are 'born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God.' Conversion brings genuinely new life, not a patched-up old one. This transformation is the work of God upon the heart. Ezekiel 36:26 promises, 'A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you... I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.' What we cannot do for ourselves, God does by His Spirit. Conversion also requires childlike humility and can come suddenly. Jesus says in Matthew 18:3, 'Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.' Saul's dramatic encounter on the Damascus road in Acts 9:3, when a light from heaven shone around him, shows that God can turn even a fierce opponent into a devoted follower. True conversion bears fruit in a changed, God-directed life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does conversion mean in the Bible?
Conversion is the decisive turning from sin to God through repentance and faith. Peter says in Acts 3:19, 'Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.' It is a radical reorientation of the heart that God Himself works in the believer.
Is conversion the same as the new birth?
They are closely connected. Jesus says in John 3:3 that one must be born again to see God's kingdom, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 calls the converted person a 'new creature.' First Peter 1:23 describes being born again by the imperishable word of God. Conversion is the turning that accompanies this new spiritual life.
Can anyone be converted?
Yes. Ezekiel 36:26 promises God will give a new heart and a new spirit, and Saul's sudden conversion on the Damascus road (Acts 9:3) shows God can transform even a fierce enemy. Matthew 18:3 reminds us conversion calls for childlike humility, which God graciously grants to all who come.
