The Conquest of Canaan in the Bible

The conquest of Canaan, recorded chiefly in the book of Joshua, narrates how God fulfilled His ancient promise to give Abraham's descendants the land of Canaan as their inheritance. It is a story not primarily of human military prowess but of divine faithfulness, for the Lord Himself granted both the land and the victory. At the outset God assured Joshua, "Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses" (Joshua 1:3). The gift was certain; Israel's task was to step into what God had already given by faith and obedience. The campaign required courage rooted in God's presence. "Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them" (Joshua 1:6). The fall of Jericho displayed that victory came by God's power, not conventional warfare: "the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city" (Joshua 6:20). The conquest was extensive and decisive—"So Joshua struck the whole land... he left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded" (Joshua 10:40)—a sobering judgment upon the deeply corrupt Canaanite nations God had long forewarned (Deuteronomy 7:1). The narrative reaches its climax in God's complete faithfulness. "So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses... And the land had rest from war" (Joshua 11:23). The summary verse declares, "Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers... Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass" (Joshua 21:43-45). Israel inherited "a land on which you had not labored, and cities that you had not built" (Joshua 24:13), a vivid picture of grace. The conquest stands as a lasting testimony that God keeps every promise He makes.
