Completion in the Bible

Completion is one of the great themes of Scripture, the assurance that what God begins He brings to its appointed end. Paul anchors this hope in the believer's life: "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). Salvation is not a project we sustain by our own strength; it is a divine work that God Himself guarantees to finish. This confidence frees the Christian from anxious striving and roots the soul in God's faithfulness. The supreme picture of completion is the cross. With His final breath Jesus cried, "It is finished" (John 19:30), declaring that the work of redemption was fully accomplished, nothing left to add, no debt unpaid. Earlier He had prayed, "I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do" (John 17:4). Because Christ completed His mission, believers can rest in a finished salvation rather than a precarious one. Jesus is therefore "the founder and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2), the one who both begins and brings to fullness the race of faith. Scripture also calls believers to pursue faithful completion of their own God-given course. Paul testified near the end, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7), and earlier said his aim was "to finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus" (Acts 20:24). The wisdom of Ecclesiastes affirms that "better is the end of a thing than its beginning" (Ecclesiastes 7:8). All history moves toward the moment when the Lord declares, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end" (Revelation 21:6). Completion, then, is both gift and calling: God finishes His work, and He invites us to finish ours faithfully in Him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about completion?
Scripture teaches that completion is fundamentally God's work. Philippians 1:6 promises that 'he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.' On the cross Jesus declared 'It is finished' (John 19:30), and Revelation 21:6 announces 'It is done.' God both begins and perfects His purposes.
What did Jesus mean by 'It is finished'?
In John 19:30, Jesus' cry 'It is finished' declared that the work of redemption was fully accomplished—the debt of sin paid in full, with nothing left to add. It echoes His prayer in John 17:4, 'I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.' Believers therefore rest in a finished, complete salvation.
How can I faithfully finish my own race?
Paul models this in 2 Timothy 4:7: 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.' In Acts 20:24 he aimed only 'to finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus.' Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:2), we press on to complete what God has given us to do.
