Commissioning in the Bible

Commissioning in the Bible is the act of being sent by God for a specific purpose—set apart, empowered, and dispatched to carry out His mission in the world. From the prophets of the Old Testament to the apostles of the New, Scripture is filled with moments where God calls a person or a people and sends them out. The supreme example is the Great Commission, where the risen Christ entrusts His followers with the task of making His salvation known to all nations. The most famous commissioning passage is Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commands, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." This is echoed in Mark 16:15, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation," and in Luke 24:47, where Jesus declares that "repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations." The mission is global, and every disciple shares in it. Commissioning is never undertaken in our own strength. In Acts 1:8 Jesus promises, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses," linking the sending with the Spirit's enabling power. Jesus also frames the commission as participation in His own sending: "As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you" (John 20:21). We go because we are sent by the One who was Himself sent. The heart's response to commissioning is captured in Isaiah 6:8, where the prophet, having seen God's glory, cries out, "Here I am! Send me." This is the posture of every commissioned servant—willing, available, and surrendered to God's purpose. Whether sent across the world or across the street, every believer is commissioned to bear witness to Christ, empowered by the Spirit and sustained by His promise to be with us always.
