College in the Bible

Though colleges and universities as we know them did not exist in biblical times, Scripture has profound wisdom for the season of study, learning, and growth that college represents. The Bible deeply values knowledge, diligence, and the pursuit of understanding—but it insists that all true learning begins with God. For the student facing new ideas, demanding workloads, and life-shaping decisions, the Word offers an anchor and a compass. The foundational principle is the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 declares, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction," and Proverbs 9:10 echoes, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight." Academic excellence divorced from reverence for God is incomplete; the wisest student is the one who learns in humble dependence on the Creator of all truth. Scripture also commends earnest, diligent study. In 2 Timothy 2:15 Paul urges, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." Diligence honors God, and Proverbs 4:7 presses the point: "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight." Wisdom is worth pursuing with everything we have. When the demands of college overwhelm, the Bible points to a generous God. James 1:5 promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach." And in Christ, Colossians 2:3 tells us, "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." The college years can be a time of remarkable spiritual growth when a student keeps Christ at the center—studying hard, seeking God's wisdom, building godly friendships, and remembering that the goal of all learning is not merely a career but a life that glorifies God.
