Civil Disobedience in the Bible
Civil disobedience in Scripture refers to the believer's refusal to obey a human command that directly contradicts the law of God. While the Bible strongly upholds submission to governing authorities, it sets a clear boundary: when human laws require disobedience to God, His people must obey Him first. The apostles stated this principle plainly before the Sanhedrin: "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). Earlier, Peter and John had answered their accusers, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge" (Acts 4:19), refusing to stop preaching the gospel even under threat. The Old Testament provides striking examples of faithful resistance. When King Nebuchadnezzar commanded worship of his golden image, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego declared, "But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up" (Daniel 3:18). Daniel himself, forbidden to pray, simply continued his habit of devotion: "he got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously" (Daniel 6:10). God honored his courage, for an angel "shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me" (Daniel 6:22). Even the Hebrew midwives "feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live" (Exodus 1:17). These accounts reveal a consistent pattern. Biblical civil disobedience is never rebellion for personal gain or convenience; it is humble, prayerful, and willing to accept the consequences. The faithful disobeyed quietly and respectfully, trusting God with the outcome rather than seizing power by force. The principle stands: Christians honor and obey the authorities God has established, yet when ordered to sin, deny Christ, or abandon worship, they must reverently refuse, knowing they answer to a higher King.
