Christmas in the Bible
Christmas celebrates the central wonder of the Christian faith: the birth of Jesus Christ, God come in human flesh to save His people. While the word "Christmas" never appears in Scripture, the event it commemorates fills the opening chapters of the Gospels. When the angel announced the news to the shepherds, he declared, "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11). The newborn child laid in a manger was no ordinary baby but the long-awaited Messiah, the Lord Himself entering the world He made. The coming of Jesus fulfilled centuries of prophetic hope. Isaiah had foretold, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given... and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). Matthew records that the virgin birth fulfilled the promise of Immanuel, "which means, God with us" (Matthew 1:23). The circumstances were strikingly humble: Mary "gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7). The King of glory entered in poverty and obscurity. Yet this lowly birth reveals the immeasurable love of God. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). The angels grasped its significance, praising God and proclaiming, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" (Luke 2:14). Christmas, then, is far more than a seasonal festival; it is the celebration of the incarnation, the moment when the Word became flesh and divine love stepped into human history to bring salvation and lasting peace.
