Christian Growth in the Bible
Christian growth, often called sanctification, is the ongoing process by which a believer matures into the likeness of Jesus Christ. It is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey that begins at conversion and continues until glory. Peter closes his second letter with the command, "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18), showing that genuine faith is never static. To grow in grace is to depend ever more deeply on God's unmerited kindness; to grow in knowledge is to know Christ Himself more truly, not merely to accumulate facts. The two advance together. Scripture pictures this maturity in vivid ways. Paul urges that, "speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ" (Ephesians 4:15), so that growth is corporate and Christ-centered, marked by both honesty and love. Believers are to be "rooted and built up in him and established in the faith" (Colossians 2:7), like a tree drawing life from rich soil. Peter likewise calls new believers to crave spiritual nourishment: "Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation" (1 Peter 2:2). Such growth is ultimately God's work, which gives the believer great confidence. Paul is "sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). Yet believers are also called to active effort, pressing on "to maturity" rather than lingering on the elementary truths (Hebrews 6:1). Christian growth, then, is the joyful pursuit of Christlikeness, sustained by grace, nourished by the Word, and guaranteed by the faithful God who finishes what He starts.
