Charity: Love in Action

Charity is active love that expresses itself in compassion and generosity toward others. In Scripture, the word "charity" (from the Latin caritas) describes that love which "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things" (1 Corinthians 13:7) and which "covers a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8). It is the greatest of the virtues: "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13). Without it, neither eloquence, nor knowledge, nor even sacrifice is of any value. Charity is not a mere feeling but a love that acts; it opens both the heart and the hand to the one in need. John expresses it powerfully: "If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth" (1 John 3:17-18). This charity is born of the love of God poured out within us and shows itself in hospitality, sharing, sincere forgiveness, and concrete kindness. These verses call the believer to love through deeds, reflecting the very character of the God who loved us first, so that our love is not empty talk but the visible fruit of His love at work in us.
