Change in the Bible

Change is one of the most universal human experiences, and the Bible speaks to it with remarkable depth, holding together two truths that at first seem to be in tension. On one hand, God Himself never changes; on the other, He is constantly at work transforming His people and bringing new things to pass. Understanding both realities anchors the believer in the midst of life's shifting seasons, offering a stability that the world cannot give while inviting us into the renewing work of grace. Scripture grounds our security in the unchanging character of God. The Lord declares through the prophet, 'For I the Lord do not change' (Malachi 3:6), and the same truth is affirmed of His Son: 'Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever' (Hebrews 13:8). James reminds us that with God 'there is no variation or shadow due to change' (James 1:17), for every good and perfect gift descends from this faithful Father. Because God does not waver, His promises and His love remain trustworthy through every storm. At the same time, God is the great agent of redemptive change. In Christ, transformation reaches the deepest level of the heart, for 'if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come' (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Lord delights to do fresh work in our lives, announcing, 'Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?' (Isaiah 43:19). And the seasons of change we navigate are not random, for 'there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens' (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Thus the Bible teaches us to rest in an unchanging God while welcoming the changes He ordains, trusting that He who began a good work will faithfully complete it, making all things new in His perfect time.
