The Candlestick in the Bible
The candlestick, or lampstand, is one of the richest symbols in Scripture, tracing a golden thread from the tabernacle through the prophets to the visions of Revelation. More than a piece of furniture, it represents the light of God's presence, the witness of his people, and ultimately the light of Christ shining in the world. Wherever it appears, it speaks of light that comes from God and is meant to shine before others. The candlestick first appears in the instructions for the tabernacle. God commanded, "Thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made" (Exodus 25:31), and Bezalel faithfully fashioned it with its branches, bowls, knops, and flowers (Exodus 37:17). Standing in the Holy Place, its seven lamps gave continual light before the Lord, a picture of God dwelling among his people and of worship that never goes dark. The prophet Zechariah saw the candlestick in a night vision: "a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon" (Zechariah 4:2), fed by two olive trees. The accompanying word, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD," revealed that the light of God's work is sustained not by human strength but by the Holy Spirit. Jesus took up the image to describe his disciples' calling: "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house" (Matthew 5:15). Believers are to let their light shine openly so that others may glorify God. Finally, in Revelation the risen Christ stands "in the midst of the seven candlesticks" (Revelation 1:12), which he explains are "the seven churches" (Revelation 1:20). The church now carries the light, accountable to keep it burning in Christ's presence. Together these passages teach that all true light is God's gift, sustained by his Spirit, entrusted to his people, and meant to shine for his glory before a watching world.
