The Calming of the Storm in the Bible

The calming of the storm is one of the most beloved and reassuring scenes in the Gospels, revealing both the deity of Jesus Christ and his tender care for his frightened followers. While Jesus and his disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee, a fierce squall arose and waves broke over the boat until it was nearly swamped. Jesus, exhausted from ministry, lay asleep on a cushion in the stern, a vivid picture of his true humanity even as the deeper truth of his divine power was about to be displayed. The terrified disciples woke him with the cry that he did not care if they perished. In response, "he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm" (Mark 4:39). With a single word the Lord stilled both wind and wave. Matthew records that he first gently rebuked their fear: "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?" (Matthew 8:26), and Luke describes how "he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm" (Luke 8:24). The sudden, total stillness left no doubt that this was no coincidence but the command of the Creator. The miracle deliberately echoes the Old Testament's portrait of God as the only One who rules the sea. "Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them" (Psalm 89:9), and "He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still" (Psalm 107:29). What the Psalms attribute to God alone, Jesus does with a word, declaring his identity as Lord over creation. The disciples' reaction captures the awe at the heart of the account: "What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" (Mark 4:41). The calming of the storm therefore teaches that Jesus is fully God, sovereign over the most threatening forces of nature, and that he is present and attentive in the storms of our lives. It calls anxious hearts away from fear and toward faith in the One whom wind and waves obey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened when Jesus calmed the storm?
As a violent storm threatened to sink the disciples' boat on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus, who had been asleep, awoke and "rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm" (Mark 4:39). With a single command he stilled both wind and waves, leaving the disciples in awe.
What does calming the storm reveal about Jesus?
It reveals that Jesus is fully God, sovereign over creation. The Psalms say of God, "Thou rulest the raging of the sea... thou stillest them" (Psalm 89:9), and "He maketh the storm a calm" (Psalm 107:29). Jesus does with a word what only God can do, which is why the disciples asked, "What manner of man is this?" (Mark 4:41).
Why did Jesus rebuke the disciples' fear?
Jesus asked, "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?" (Matthew 8:26). Their panic showed they did not yet trust that the One in the boat with them held all power. He calls anxious hearts to replace fear with faith in the Lord whom even wind and sea obey.
