Business in the Bible
The Bible has a great deal to say about business, work, and commerce, and its teaching is neither anti-wealth nor naively optimistic. Scripture treats business as a legitimate sphere of human activity that can honor God when it is marked by integrity, diligence, wise planning, humble dependence on the Lord, and gratitude for him as the true source of every gain. The foundation of godly business is committing one's work to the Lord. "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established" (Proverbs 16:3). Rather than trusting in our own cleverness, the believer entrusts plans and labor to God, who establishes what is done in dependence on him. This shapes the very motive of work: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians 3:23). Christian business is ultimately service rendered to Christ, lifting even ordinary labor into worship. Scripture is emphatic about honesty in commerce. "A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight" (Proverbs 11:1). Fair dealing, accurate measures, and honest pricing are not optional ethics but matters that delight or grieve God himself. Wise business also requires careful planning and counting the cost. Jesus asked, "Which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost?" (Luke 14:28), commending foresight, budgeting, and realistic preparation before undertaking any venture. Finally, the Bible guards the businessperson against pride and presumption. Moses reminded Israel that "it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth" (Deuteronomy 8:18), so that prosperity is a gift from God, not a self-made achievement. James rebukes those who boast, "To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain," forgetting they cannot control tomorrow (James 4:13). Taken together, Scripture calls believers to do business with diligence and excellence, to deal honestly, to plan wisely, to depend on God for every increase, and to hold their plans humbly under his sovereign will.
