Builders in the Bible
Building is one of Scripture's richest images for the way God and his people work together to establish something lasting. The Bible speaks of literal builders who raised walls and temples, and of spiritual builders who give their lives to construct the church and a faithful life. Above all, it insists that no human building endures unless God himself is the master builder. "Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it" (Psalm 127:1) sets the foundation for the whole theme: human effort apart from God is wasted toil, but work joined to his purpose stands. The Old Testament gives a vivid picture of faithful building in Nehemiah, whose people rebuilt Jerusalem's broken wall amid fierce opposition. "So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work" (Nehemiah 4:6). Their success came from a united heart, persevering labor, and dependence on God's protection, a model of how God's people accomplish his work in difficult times. Jesus made building the climax of the Sermon on the Mount. "Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock" (Matthew 7:24). The wise builder is the one who not only hears Christ's words but obeys them, so that when storms come the house stands. The foundation, not the appearance, decides whether a life endures. The apostle Paul applies the image to ministry and to the church. As a "wise masterbuilder" he laid a foundation and warned each one to take heed how he builds upon it, "for other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 3:10-11). The church itself is "built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone" (Ephesians 2:20). Together these passages teach that true builders depend on the Lord, labor with a willing heart, build on Christ as the only foundation, and obey his word, so that what they raise will stand forever.
