Brotherly Love in the Bible

Brotherly love is the sincere affection that unites brothers and sisters in the faith, and it is the distinguishing mark of the people of God. It is not a mere passing feeling, but a deep and active attachment that expresses itself in service, forgiveness, and mutual support. Scripture presents this love as the most visible sign of the authenticity of a disciple of Christ. Jesus himself makes this love the central commandment of his community. In John 13:34-35 he declares: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Brotherly love thus becomes the believer's identity before the world. The apostle Peter urges Christians to this fervent love. 1 Peter 4:8 teaches: "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins." This love does not deny faults, but it bears them, forgives, and restores, preserving the unity of the family of God. How do we cultivate brotherly love? By serving, forgiving, encouraging, and bearing with our brothers in patience. Romans 12:10 sums it up: "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." Brotherly love is lived out in concrete acts of attention and kindness, reflecting the love that Christ first showed us. 1 John 4:11 calls us to it: "Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."
