A Broken Spirit in the Bible
Scripture reveals a deeply comforting truth: God does not despise a broken spirit; on the contrary, he draws near to it. Where one might think that weakness, sorrow, or humiliation pushes a person away from God, the Bible teaches exactly the opposite. Brokenness, far from being a barrier, often becomes the very place where the Lord manifests his nearness, his comfort, and his power to restore. Psalm 51:17 expresses this grace with force: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." David, after his sin, discovers that God does not first seek outward offerings, but a humble and repentant heart. Honest brokenness before God is precious in his sight. Psalm 34:18 adds this tender promise: "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." The Lord does not remain distant from the afflicted; he stands close by, like a shepherd beside a wounded sheep. The pain brought to God finds in him a refuge. God not only draws near, but he heals. Psalm 147:3 declares: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." How does a broken spirit find comfort? By drawing near to God in honesty, by pouring out the heart before him, and by receiving his comfort and his restoration. Brokenness placed into God's hands meets there his nearness, his healing, and a new beginning. What seemed to be an ending becomes, in his hands, ground for restoration.
