Jesus the Bread of Life

Among the great "I am" declarations of the Gospel of John, the one about the bread of life holds a central place. Jesus presents himself as the true food of the soul: just as bread sustains the body, Christ sustains and satisfies the inner being. This image reveals a deep spiritual hunger that neither riches, nor pleasures, nor the achievements of this world can fill β€” a hunger that Christ alone fully satisfies. In John 6:35 Jesus declares: "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." These words come after the multiplication of the loaves, when the crowd was seeking Jesus for the food that perishes. He then turns their hearts toward food that endures to eternal life, pointing to himself as that food. A little further on, in John 6:51, he explains: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." These words announce the sacrifice of the cross: it is by giving himself that Christ becomes the source of eternal life for all who believe. How does the soul feed on this bread? By coming to Christ through faith, by meditating on his Word, and by abiding in communion with him. Just as the body needs bread each day, the soul must feed daily on Christ and his truth. John 6:27 urges us: "Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life." To come to Jesus is to find a lasting satisfaction that the world cannot offer.
