The Body as the Temple of God

Scripture teaches a profound truth about the dignity of the human body: for the believer, it is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Paul expresses it without ambiguity: "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). This reality confers immense value upon the body: it is not a mere instrument, but the very dwelling place of the Spirit of God. From this truth flows a responsibility. Paul adds: "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (1 Corinthians 6:20). The believer no longer belongs to himself; his bodily life is now consecrated to the Lord. To honor God with one's body is to live in purity, to flee what enslaves, and to care for what has been entrusted to us. Authentic worship embraces the body as well. Paul exhorts believers: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service" (Romans 12:1). Thus the body becomes a place of worship and service. The whole life of the believer, even in the most ordinary gestures, can glorify God: "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). To recognize that our body is a temple calls us to holiness and to thanksgiving.
