The Blood Covenant in Scripture

The blood covenant reveals the way in which God commits himself to his people, solemnly and irrevocably. From the Old Testament onward, blood sealed the most sacred commitments: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls" (Leviticus 17:11). The blood represented the life offered, the price of an eternal bond between the holy God and a people called to belong to him. All these ancient sacrifices pointed to a greater reality. At the Last Supper, Jesus took the cup and declared: "This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you" (Luke 22:20). In him the blood covenant finds its perfect fulfillment: no longer the blood of animals, but that of the Son of God himself, poured out once for all. The epistle to the Hebrews underscores this: "By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us" (Hebrews 9:12). This covenant sealed at the cross gives the believer the full assurance of forgiveness and reconciliation. Paul affirms it: "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" (Ephesians 1:7). Where the repeated sacrifices could not take away sin, the blood of Christ establishes a definitive covenant, founded not on our efforts but on the faithfulness of God. Every altar of the old covenant pointed toward the cross, where God committed himself forever to all who believe.

It is a solemn commitment sealed by blood, a symbol of the life offered. The ancient sacrifices prefigured the new covenant Jesus established: "This cup is the new testament in my blood" (Luke 22:20).
How is the blood covenant fulfilled in Christ?
Ephesians 1:7 teaches that "in whom we have redemption through his blood." The blood of Christ seals an eternal covenant of forgiveness and reconciliation, fulfilling and surpassing all the sacrifices of the Old Testament (Hebrews 9:12).
Why was blood necessary to seal a covenant?
Because "the life of the flesh is in the blood" (Leviticus 17:11): blood represents life given for atonement. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission (Hebrews 9:22). By pouring out his own blood, Christ paid the price of an eternal redemption.
