The Blessing of God

Blessing expresses the favor and goodness of God poured out upon his people. From the blessing of Abraham to the promises of the New Testament, Scripture reveals a God who delights to bless and who calls his people to be themselves a source of blessing to others. To bless is not only to receive a good thing; it is to enter into the stream of divine generosity and to let it flow toward our neighbor. God invites his people to prove his faithfulness through trust. Through the prophet, he declares: "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse... and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need" (Malachi 3:10). Blessing thus springs from the goodness of God and answers a life of trust and obedience. But Scripture does not stop at receiving; it commands the passing on. "Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing" (1 Peter 3:9). The believer is called to become a channel of good, blessing even those who offend them, in the image of the God who makes his sun rise on the good and the evil. These verses celebrate the generosity of God and the life that flourishes under his favor. Blessing is received by faith and multiplied by being shared. To walk in trust, to give generously, and to bless our neighbor: this is the path of the one who inherits and spreads blessing.
