Bible College: What Scripture Says

While the term "Bible college" is a modern one, the biblical vision behind it—rigorous, reverent training in God's Word for the work of ministry—runs throughout Scripture. The foundational text for such study is 2 Timothy 2:15: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." This verse calls every student of Scripture to diligent, accurate study, the very heart of theological education. Paul's charge assumes that handling God's Word well is hard work that requires discipline, humility, and skill. The purpose of biblical training is never mere information but transformation and equipping. Second Timothy 3:16 reminds us that "all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." A Bible college exists to immerse students in this God-breathed Word so they are thoroughly equipped for every good work. The psalmist captures the practical aim in Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." The goal of study is a life rightly ordered by the light of Scripture. All genuine learning begins in the right posture toward God. Proverbs 1:7 lays the cornerstone: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge," and Proverbs 4:7 urges, "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight." Biblical education is not the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake or for pride, but reverent wisdom that bows before the Lord. Ultimately, all such study leads to Christ, "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3). A faithful Bible college, then, trains the mind and shapes the heart, sending out workers who handle the Word accurately, fear the Lord humbly, and point students and congregations alike to the inexhaustible riches found in Jesus. Whether in a formal classroom or in lifelong personal study, this is the calling Scripture sets before every believer who would teach and serve.
