Being Still Before God

"Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). In the midst of noise and haste, Scripture invites us to a trusting stillness before the Lord. This quietness is neither passivity nor indifference; it is an active rest in the sovereignty of God, a decision to stop striving in order to acknowledge the One who governs all things. Silence before God is not an emptiness, but a presence. Psalm 46 describes a world that is shaken: the mountains tremble, the waters roar, the nations rage. It is precisely in this turmoil that the call resounds: "Be still!" The invitation is not to flee reality, but to stand firm in the midst of it, because God is "our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). Quietness is born of trust, not of the absence of storm. This stillness is nourished by self-surrender. "Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). To be still is to open one's hands to lay down one's burdens into God's, rather than clutching them in anguish. It is also to meditate on his Word and to grow quiet in order to hear him more clearly. These verses teach us to calm the soul, to release control, and to acknowledge that God is at work even when everything seems to be in upheaval around us. Quietness is not the absence of problems, but trust in the One who governs them. To learn to be still before God is to let his peace guard the heart.
